HUSH

Hush – the latest temporary landscape artwort by Steve Messam (international environmental artist based in Upper Teesdale) launches tonight (18/07/2019). The installation will be up between 19 July and 4 August 2019 – http://bit.ly/2JQX3i8

Hush is one of the biggest outdoor artworks ever created in the UK. Longer than four football pitches and dwarfing the Turbine Gallery at the Tate Modern, it explores the geology, mining heritage and landscape of the North Pennines AONB and UNESCO Global Geopark. It will transform the vast space of Bales Hush, a former lead mining site near Newbiggin-in-Teesdale.

The artwork can be reached via a scenic 3km/1.8 mile walk (each way) from Bowlees Visitor Centre – full details and a map available from the link below. Printed guides are available from Bowlees Visitor Centre. Alternatively minibuses will be available (from Bowlees) on Friday 19 July and on Saturday and Sunday of the following three weekends (i.e. 20/21 July, 27/28 July and 3/4 August). For more information contact the centre on 01833 622145 or click the link below.

Hush has been designed to have minimal lasting impact on Bales Hush. The anchors that secure the piece leave little trace in the ground, and the fabric is fully recyclable. This time of year was chosen to minimise disruption to ground-nesting birds and other wildlife. It was made possible through funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England. With kind permission of Raby Estate and local farmer Barry Iceton.
